Shindig
Well, I'd never heard of the word before! So I got out the ol'
dictionary, and had a look: Shindig, or Shindy, slang, 1. A noisy
party, dance, etc, 2. a quarrel or commotion. A 19th Century
Derivative of SHINTY.
So... what is Shinty? Again, the jolly dictionary: Shinty (USA shinny)
1. A simple form of hocky placed with a ball and sticks curved
at the lower end. 2 the stick used in this game. 3. to play shinty.
A 17th century word, probably derived from the cry "Shin Ye!" in
the game.
The shin, of course, is the lower part of the leg, below
the knee. In Old English, it was "scinu", which is related to the
Old High German "scina" which means "needle", and a Norwegian
dialect word "skina", which means small disc.
There we are then! Shindig. Wow.
